9-inch Chocolate Cake

This is a simple 9-inch chocolate cake that uses basic ingrdients that can be commonly found at home. When I made this, I mixed my own baking powder and buttermilk from basic ingredients as I didn’t have them on hand!


Ingredients

Dry

  • 170g all-purpose flour
  • 90g unsweentened natural coca powder
  • 1½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet

  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 200g granulated sugar
  • 200g brown sugar
  • 160ml coconut oil (can also use vegetable or canola oil)
  • 4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 240ml buttermilk (room temperature)

Utensils

  • 9-inch cake pan
  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 medium bowl
  • whisk
  • teaspoon
  • measuring cup or weighing machine
  • sieve (optional) (to sift flour and sugar for fine texture)
  • oven

Baking Powder

  Baking soda Cream of tartar
Ratio 1 portion 2 portions
Example 1 5g 10g
Example 2 1 teaspoon 2 teaspoons

Buttermilk

  Lemon juice (or white vinegar) Full-cream milk
Ratio 1 portion 24 portions
Example 1 5ml 120ml
Example 2 2 teaspoons in 1 metric cup fill up remaining cup

Steps

  1. Pre-heat oven at 180 degrees Celsius
  2. In large bowl, whisk dry ingredients
  3. In medium bowl, whisk wet ingredients except buttermilk
  4. Pour ½ portion of buttermilk into large bowl and mix
  5. Pour remaining ½ portion of buttermilk into medium bowl and mix
  6. Mix contents of medium bowl into large bowl
  7. Pour contens of large bowl into cake pan
  8. Put cake pan into oven and bake for 40 minutes
